Why become a Helper? Well, let one of our Riders speak for herself. Elizabeth is aged 5 years old and has Muscular Dystrophy and although unable to walk, uses her powered wheelchair to great effect. However, riding has added another dimension to her mobility, while at the same time exercising and strengthening her muscles and joints. Elizabeth says
When I ride Holly I can feel what its like to walk; Holly is my legs when I am riding her. Marion, my teacher, is fun and Liz and Claire help me to ride. I have lots of fun at riding with my friends that go. I like riding Ebony the robotic horse because I get to go fast.
To comply with current regulations when working with children and vulnerable adults, all volunteers need to have a current Criminal Records Bureau Certificate. This will be applied for through the Group.
Several social occasions are arranged within the Group to enable volunteers to meet together in an informal setting. Our AGM in the summer is followed by a Barbeque which is attended by Helpers, Riders, parents, carers and friends. Our Autumn Helpers Supper arranged in a local Public House or Restaurant is another fun occasion.
