Volunteering as a Helper

Providing the remedial benefits while teaching disabled children and adults to ride is a very labour intensive job. As well as the Group Instructor, generally three volunteers are required for each rider – one to lead the pony and one to walk either side of the rider. The Shelley Centre is always on the look-out for volunteers who would be prepared to help with the lessons. It is not essential to have knowledge of horses, as the group organises training sessions for new and inexperienced Helpers. Helpers do need to be enthusiastic and reliable.

Why become a Helper? Well, let one of our Riders speak for herself. Elizabeth is aged 5 years old and has Muscular Dystrophy and although unable to walk, uses her powered wheelchair to great effect. However, riding has added another dimension to her mobility, while at the same time exercising and strengthening her muscles and joints. Elizabeth says
“When I ride Holly I can feel what it’s like to walk; Holly is my legs when I am riding her. Marion, my teacher, is fun and Liz and Claire help me to ride. I have lots of fun at riding with my friends that go. I like riding Ebony the robotic horse because I get to go fast”.

To comply with current regulations when working with children and vulnerable adults, all volunteers need to have a current Criminal Records Bureau Certificate. This will be applied for through the Group.

Several social occasions are arranged within the Group to enable volunteers to meet together in an informal setting. Our AGM in the summer is followed by a Barbeque which is attended by Helpers, Riders, parents, carers and friends. Our Autumn Helpers Supper – arranged in a local Public House or Restaurant – is another fun occasion.
